Mexico’s long-established record label Illegal Alien Records is sixteen years old this year, and to celebrate it has taken on the task of publishing a series of multi-volume releases that bring together its history, its present, and its future – in vinyl and digital format. Eight volumes in all, with 44 tracks and 46 great artists. So many artists have come together to put together this sonic puzzle that it becomes innocuous to name them one by one. All you have to do is go to the catalog of the label headed by Ricardo Garduno, play it, and enjoy a very special anniversary.
A few days before the release of volume seven of this compilation, we present the premiere of Freaker, one of the songs that make up this volume, made by Dustin Zahn. Zahn is a Techno producer and disc jockey, originally from Wisconsin, United States, currently residing in Berlin, Germany. Co-founder of Abiotic Recordings and founder of Enemy Records, he presents a portentous sound.
A freak is a person, thing, animal, or event, that is extremely unusual or different, of which there is nothing like it. When we use freaker we refer to someone specific with that quality. Well, our perception of the sound of this song is pre-activated with those semantics, which makes us detect freak sounds at the beginning, which quickly turn into recursive and very rhythmic pulses. This sound structure produces hypnotic and ravishing atmospheres, which are circumscribed to fine and subtle limits, behind which madness and delirium remain latent.
In that latency, behind the manifest, there are constant crossings, between what is behind and what is in front, allowed by the sound design. While that happens, fleeting bulbs keep our hearts beating, which are already enchanted in the rhythm. Everything finally becomes a single dimension; the sound totalizes the two sides of the form, finding an impressive sonorous whole.
