Saintes.Glaces is the polymorphous project led by the life partners of Royer Dupré aka Lidwine (vocals) and Rolando Torres Martin (electronics). They have decided to unite creatively through a project that knows no rules and gives them the freedom to experiment. For this new project, there is no better place to give free rein to their artistic creativity than the Subsist Records slot. Faith Disciplines is the sublabel of the Spanish platform, focused on more experimental sound territories.
They present their work entitled Contrées – lands, in English, – whose aim is based on the crossroads of worlds, on the connection of cultures and time. It is a musical alchemy that draws on ethnomusical archives from Africa and the urban tribality that permeates our bodies. Electronics are transformed into electric tensions, a meeting point between Art Brut and contemporary technology, of cheap sounds and rhythmic sophistication. Composed entirely by Rolando Torres Martín through his laptop, Contrées is monopolized by the voice of singer-songwriter Lidwine, in a shamanic immersion with improvised scrolls.
Nestled in the climax of this work is Plume Serpente, which can be translated as snake feather. Quickly the rattling and the sound that evokes the chase that this reptile makes to catch its prey capture us immediately. It nimbly manages to perch on top of every dissimilar sound, with freshness and great attention to detail in the sound design. In two and a half minutes, this snake feather – sweet paradox, for snakes have scales – manages to make the sound fly – from there the sense of paradox – to unimaginable heights, enhanced by the fleeting tribal vocals and the broad, enabling structure.
This debut work by Saintes.Glaces is the beginning of a musical experience that seeks to catapult our imagination into a collective unconscious. Through a mixture of free experiments and reflections on our current world, Faith Disciplines continues to empower these sonic experiments in a way that few others currently do. Another monumental stamp from the Subsist Records sublabel.
