Club Furies

Vexillary is one of the creations of New York City-based producer Reza Seirafi. His diverse oeuvre is infused with a singularly somber undertone and shaped by his unique productions. As a chemist, Reza was fascinated by the secret links between unrelated chemical ingredients that create balanced, otherworldly aromas. His production style follows the same rule, as he creates his own brand of decadent electronic music, whose synthesis comes from multiple sounds, rhythms, and atmospheres. Another of his creations is con:trace, his electronic music label, underpinned by industrial, techno, and dark electronics.

His most recent creation is called Horror in Dub, his third full-length album, composed of ten original tracks. A strong work of electronica, it seamlessly blends techno, dark wave, and bass music with dub tinges. This combination offers a deep dive into the realm of eerie horror whose parallel does not lose the haunting beauty it carries on the horizon. Vexillary‘s transformative production style is evident on the album, which deftly interweaves the realistic experience of the human condition with the fantastical influences of body horror and Lovecraftian motifs. The latter manifest themselves not only in the music but also in the cover art of the album and the singles that precede it.

The voices of Baylee, who returns as a guest, and Madishu, a newcomer to the Vexillary roster, express themes of transformation, fragility of the human form, and cosmic terrors throughout the energetic songs that make up the album. An example of this is The Smoke, the eighth track on this album, whose phrases «breathe the smoke» and «feel the heat» become the apexes from which the darkness of the entire album’s sound is fleshed out.

Amid harsh sounds, at times with flashes of synthpop immersed in dark wave, the atmospheres that envelop the entire work can be felt: between absolute doom and the rickety hope that becomes sublime hope. Sonically, Vexillary‘s art shows all its power. In a violent, and finely polished sound design, the end of The Smoke leaves us on the edge of the precipice; where we have to decide whether we turn to everything or to nothing. In the end, feeling the heat and breathing the smoke become guides to what the song wants from us for the rest of the album.

Horror in Dub ultimately reminds us that even within the most harrowing experiences there is an irresistible beauty and attraction, as the lyrics of the title track crystallize: «I found love in horror, and horror, horror in dub».
