^L_ is the name of Brazilian producer and sound artist Luis Fernando. His debut album was released in 2014 through the Berlin-based Antime platform. In 2015, ^L_ embarked on a successful two-week tour of Germany with his Antime labelmate AAAA. He then released his more dancefloor-oriented EP, The Outsider, also through Antime in 2016.
Aside from his work as a producer, Fernando regularly teaches sound design workshops focusing on film and radio work. Fernando started making music as a young teenager, citing bands like My Bloody Valentine or Nine Inch Nails as inspiration for his first shoegaze-leaning excursions into the music world. The older he got, the more eclectic his tastes and his own varied output became. Nowadays, ^L_ works mostly in digital and oscillates between sounds inspired by film scores, Acid Techno, Noise, and abstract electronic music.
One of his most recent works is presented by the techno label MTDN Audio Rec, founded in 2013 by DJ and techno producer Fcode. It is entitled Drugstore Cowboy, made up of three tracks. The sound of the work is defined as «an amazing track, which delights us with a sick synth melody that inspires us to take it to the next level». An original version, a smooth version, and the remix by NUXX are the tracks that compose it, which we tell you are a must.
Drugstore Cowboy is a film by Gus Van Sant, starring Matt Dillon. One website reviews it as follows. «United States, the early 1970s. Bob Hughes is the boss of a gang of drug addicts, made up of his wife, Diane, and another couple, Rick and Nadine. They travel the length and breadth of the country robbing pharmacies to satisfy their desperate need for drugs. After a tragic event, Bob rethinks his situation; he decides to get clean and start a new life. Things, however, are not easy for him».
What does that movie from the late eighties have to do with the title of this work and its sound? Traveling across a country robbing pharmacies to get drugs fills the body with adrenaline, no matter how professional Bob Hughes and his gang get. Blood pumps in a crescendo from the heart to the whole body and back through all the veins. That’s the visual correlate and rhythmic core through which the Brazilian native’s new work accelerates everything until it progressively reaches delirium.
With this rush of adrenaline, unstoppable rhythm, and exploding hearts, the sound achieves valleys of calm and silence through which to reinforce its essence. Freneticism reconverted into subtle and placid notes in the midst of hard and imposing techno storms that leave everyone on the canvas and in the sand of the dance floor. The floor has stumbled and cracked. The raver/listener is about to reach the experiential limit of sound. Once the track arrives to it, it provides the elements to slow down uniquely and spectacularly.
This is another great work by ^L_, which combines sophisticated visual correlates and fierce rhythms, which know how to take us to borderline deliriums and impose transitive experiential resilience. Drugstore Cowboy takes us to another level, indeed.
