Hypnotic Room was founded by influential Sydney DJ Hi-Shock in April 2005 as an adventurous sub-label of Elektrax Recordings. Their sonic cornerstones include genres and rhythms such as Tech House, Deep/Dubby Techno, and quality Deep House. For their new release, they present Buru, a collision of two Finnish titans.

Buru presents an extended play entitled Shivacult, consisting of three original tracks celebrating the various reincarnations of Shiva in different cultures throughout history, and a remix by Empath. Nasty grooves combined with bass are hard enough to give us bloody knuckles. Tampere-flavoured warehouse attitude.

Karttikeya, known as Murugan, Skanda, Kumara, and Subrahmanya, is the Hindu god of war. He is the son of Parvati and Shiva, brother of Ganesha, and a god whose life story has many versions in Hinduism. As a god of war, the sound comes from the excitement and anticipation of such a confrontation. Amidst the raising of instruments, ready for it, and echoes of the past, the confrontation looms, but not soon.

A general, military strategist, and philosopher of ancient China once said that the «art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting». In the same way, in the sound of Karttikeya, all possible strategies are played out without actually fighting – sonically, of course. Between continuous latencies and veiled manifestos, the rhythm and the atmospheres always cry out for more but never give in too much. Precision in the sound design, ambient sophistication, and assured audience.

It’s clear why this work managed to get signed to Hypnotic Room. And it’s equally clear why the Australian label enjoys such prestige because artists like Buru make it shine by shining on their own.
