Fur:ther Sessions is synonymous with a deep and timeless kind of electronica. Musically, the approach is broad, much like a well-organised festival. We can expect to find everything from crystalline ambient to harder techno, all united by a certain sonic signature. Based in Bad Kohlgrub, Germany, the platform presents the third volume of Praeterea, a thirteen-track Various Artists compilation. This volume comes two and a half years after the second, and three years after the first, the one that opened the German platform’s adventure as a label. We could conceive this third volume as an overview of the label that points to two places/times: to the past and to the future, always from the present.

Axel Toben, also known as Alejandro Bento, is a multifaceted artist from Spain. With a deep roots in techno, his musical interests span a wide spectrum. He is not only a composer, DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist but also an avid explorer of sound. His artistic journey celebrates the blending of analogue sounds, classical instruments, tribal rhythms and the wonders of digital technology. His music possesses a hypnotic quality, interwoven with harmonious intrigue. The organic textures and tribal rhythms of his creations can transport the listener into a trance-like state.

The Spanish artist contributes with Kaeru, a seven-and-a-half minute track, whose name could allude to the term frog in Japanese, a symbol of fertility and good fortune, and, as the word in Japanese means «to return», this could mean that frogs can relate to things or people returning to their place of origin.

The sound itself is exciting to begin with, with a fast but not frenetic pace and unrivalled atmospheric depth, modelled in finely selected layers. With these elements, which are at the same time enviable qualities, the sound brings out jungle-like and ancient atmospheres, surrounded by magic and mystery, which at times stand still in time. And from there to ethereal places, floating in fresh airs, surrounded by shining and well-polished swords.

In the end, everything is covered with tribalism and menacing entities, which, reticent and lurking, become prowlers of the dance floor, that elusive place in the sound until now. This produces vibrant emotions and sensations, which make this track one of the best on this compilation, making Axel Toben one of our favourites. The past shines, the present effervesces and the future opens up for Fur:ther Sessions.
