You can put it down to his rural background, to being straight edge, or simply to having a special sensitivity for beauty, the obscure and the different. What cannot be denied is that this young Spaniard has a very personal and disruptive techno approach. Sober Techno is how he has christened the style he has been pursuing for so many years in the studio until he considers it his own and unmistakable. A lifetime of infinite and diverse musical references, ranging from the Post Rock of Mogwai, the Nu Metal of Deftones, or the Jazz of Chet Baker to the Hip Hop of the 90s or Drum & Bass and Jungle as electronic pillars.
All these influences have been mixed with a thoughtful and natural personality, resulting in a sound that reflects their purest identity. The eclecticism in the production means that it doesn’t matter what speed, energy, or sub-genre you want to label each cut. Daniel Rifaterra will have left his mark with powerful percussions, melancholic melodies, serenity in the reverberations, and, above all, risk in creativity.
It’s time for his talent to reach Diffuse Reality Records, where he presents Wearin’ yesterday’s misfortunes like a smile, a rather evocative and suggestive title. To be in the world with the misfortunes of the past as if they were a smile – what a way to face the past and its misfortunes. We love the title and all the meaningful density behind it. Ten original tracks shape this long play that can easily be one of the best of these weeks.
Avrillot immediately puts us in threatening territories and dark atmospheres. Amidst vibrating brass through fine electrifications and agile rhythms in crescendo, the world opens up before us. A world that is certainly not the one we expect, but the one Daniel Rifaterra has laid out for us. Ethereal pauses that seem to run into silence in search of handles, and again metallic freneticism.
Subsumed under his sound, with the yoke of his Sober Techno, and with the sky tinged with black and yellow in the midst of invisible sandstorms, which only let us feel their strength. Fierceness is mediated by a sophisticated sound design and clean structures, with well-coupled sonic layers, that stand out in unstoppable strength and force. There is no doubt that Daniel Rifaterra has done it again, this time on the Spanish platform.
