The Spanish label based in Valencia, whose motto is «Subsist against world pressure», presents its new release. This is one of those releases that remind us and strengthen that Subsist Records is positioned as a world reference in the sound and concept that they carry out in each reference. Sometimes embedded in Sci-Fi Techno, sometimes in fierce and brilliant techno, sometimes in experimental techno; always in the avant-garde and real underground – if these words still make sense.
This time it’s experimental techno, if we can call it that, which is also accompanied by electro and acid sounds. The artist Alex Dubasov himself talks about him and his work. «I am 43 years old. I have been involved in music since childhood. At the age of 13, I organized a cyberpunk group in which I composed music on the ZX Spectrum computer. Later musical studies have always been based on modern technologies, even if they were associated with playing musical instruments. Since 2015, I have been interested in modular synthesis, writing music, film soundtracks, and performances.»
«The work I present for your attention is composed of material recorded over 7 years (from 2015 to 2022), a reel-to-reel tape recorder, and a large number of analog instruments used for the recording with no post-mixing. The main idea I speak to within the framework of this release is the loneliness of a person as an individual and the inability to assimilate into society because personal loneliness is not a connecting factor. All the activities of a person’s life concern only him; he sees and feels the world only while he is inside his cocoon.»
We are in front of a powerful release since the conceptual point of view. Then in sound the thematization of the individual and society is formidable. Taking this as a starting point, everything becomes a dance between the individual and society and the machines and cables that ʞik models for us. A complex work, full of nuances and subtleties that turn out to be sophisticated. A hint of all this is Attraction, whose title in itself is symptomatic of what this sound is looking for.
How do you catch the attention of someone who is at first a little open to being caught? The cinematic atmospheres of this track, trapped in ancient and future times simultaneously are an impressive hook. Amidst fine dust and decaying cybernetics, the sound settles into unknown and frightening wastelands. Time passes and the sound transpires in the infinity of it, losing itself in its potential quality. The hope that might once have existed is gone, or at least, it begins to be extinguished in an almost unassailable way. And as that happens the sound drifts into silence.
Now, remember all this in the context of the individual/society relationship in which the sound of this work is entrenched. A relationship that is always problematic, hopeless at times, and sometimes paradoxical. That Ʞik‘s sound has addressed it is magnificent. Another perfect stamp of Subsist Records.
