Club Furies

After debuting as a music label, Mexico City’s legendary Departamento Studio Bar launches its second release. Departamento Records presents us with a very special release, marking the beginning of an unlimited series of monthly live jam sessions led by legendary keyboardist Erik Deutsch. These sessions have been taking place regularly at Departamento Studio Bar in Roma Norte, Mexico City since 2021.

The magic of these moments has been created by a rotating cast of Erik’s friends: diverse, talented, and outstanding musicians from diverse international backgrounds. Each Scorpio Sessions session is completely unique, allowing the different musicians to share their styles and influences to create a cohesive moment and performance. This first installment features the supernatural talents of Fer Ruvel, Alwyn Robinson, Sly5thAve, Hiram Griss, Pablo Madrigal, and Tomek Miernowski.

Hypnagogia is the state of transition from wakefulness to sleep, also defined as the state of waking consciousness during the onset of sleep. Its opposite state is described as hypnopompia, the state of transition from sleep to wakefulness. Mental phenomena that may occur during this “threshold of consciousness” phase include hypnagogic hallucinations, lucid dreaming, and sleep paralysis.

It is also the first track of this first installment of the Scorpio Sessions with a slight variation in the name. But let’s listen carefully to the combination that each instrument achieves in interaction with the other and the relationships that they lead to. The first effect on the listener is safe immersion, achieved by spacey notes that emulate wavering stardust in the environment. Remember that we are passing from wakefulness to sleep; only that in the field of art neither wakefulness nor sleep necessarily allude to a physiological state.

We must find the interpretations that awaken the sound of this track. Between fine notes and layers that magically overlap, we have been transported to those special sessions at the Studio Bar in Roma Norte. Imagine or remember the moment if you lived it: each artist playing with their fingers each instrument they own; each apex of their body coordinated in a trance so that the combination of sounds is perfect. At the end everything is floating in ethereal and idyllic atmospheres, reaching the ineffable.
