Club Furies

Dj Smithee is a unique character in the sphere of Armenian electronic music. He knows how to create a whole mix of genres and styles in which every particle sounds perfectly. He knows how to experiment while remaining true to his musical roots. Club Furies had the opportunity to have this Armenian artist in our mix series, and fortunately, we didn’t miss it.

Our mix series is called Cintas Furiosas – Furious Tapes, in English. They are inspired by the band from the cult film The Warriors (1979) called Baseball Furies, and the scintillating Imperator Furiosa, the iconic character from the fourth installment of the Mad Max saga, Fury Road (2015). Conceived as tapes that express a “furious sound”, both as a metaphor and as a sonic process, they acquire a special and unique fury with each artist they feature. With Dj Smithee, the result is full of energy, versatilidad and endless sonic expansionism.

One of the best qualities of this mix is the ability to combine and transition between songs that seemingly do not keep the right structures for their coupling. However, the ingenuity and creativity of Dj Smithee achieve the coupling. The greatest achievement of this is not that, but the capacity that this generates in the listener/dancer, that before such a good surprise elevates the mood and listening.

We should not expect a specific type of atmosphere and rhythms, but the creation of a sound universe with multiple layers, atmospheres, and rhythms, which together form what we like to call the unity of difference, that concept of Niklas Luhmann that alludes to the ability of something to find its unity in what is different. Thus, the visual landscapes can go from deep raves and lit dancefloors to nocturnal city streets and frozen lakes, away from all hustle and bustle, where the only thing that causes noise is the coming and going of nature and the sound of Dj Smithee.

Nor do they follow one another sequentially, but the structure of the sound and the mix allows for continuous interchanges between one and the other. In the climax moments of the film, hypnotism intertwines with immersion in the sound. That then and finally reaches madness, delirium, and freneticism, which makes the floor crack.
