Wetland is a collection of unknown stories. Modular villages, textured layers of space, rhythms of roads, heaviness of the earth, high walls of factories, dances around a fire, fields of experiments. This is the label run by Russian producer Damne.
For their latest release, they present one of the hottest collaborations I’ve ever heard. It’s Finnish producer Empath and Australian producer Unknownfunction. Together they present Renewed Landscape, a collection of four original tracks and six remixes by Kitkatone, Speed Mode, Sporegular, Tutulsky, Fonic, and Locate. In the heart of a post-apocalyptic soundscape, where echoes of war and the embers of destruction still linger, two enigmatic artists have woven a hypnotic tapestry. Their collaborative EP transcends borders and bridges continents with its visceral techno pulse.
Haunting, hypnotic techno that springs from a scorched earth, where once thriving cities now lie in ruins. The smoke has dissipated, revealing a desolate beauty, a landscape pulsing with latent energy. The drums of war have ceased, but their beat echoes off the cracked pavement and twisted steel. It is a place where hope and despair dance a delicate tango.
Sephiroth is the main antagonist of Final Fantasy VII. He is a former renowned soldier who defected when he lost his sanity. He is also one of the original tracks in this work. What happens after what once shone now no longer? What happens when in the heat of the flames it is extinguished and leaves ashes and dust behind?
The brilliance with which this pair of artists shaped the sound of this release is in a few words mind-blowing, spectacular, and unparalleled -at least in these last months. There is a synthesis of strength, unstoppable character, and voracity on the one hand and on the other sensitivity and subtlety with all the emotions and implications of the visual and conceptual correlates.
That is to say, yes, the world is over, at least the one we knew, and the cities that shone now are dulled. That always brings with it new possibilities and perhaps other shines not taken into account. But at the same time, there will always be those who mourn those falls. So the sound of Empath and Unknownfunction shines for its impact, and its ability to generate strong, versatile, and very compact structures. This allows the duality put into the sound not to spill over and to shine for its precision.
