Maria Torres, better known as Empusa, is a DJ based in the south of Mexico City. She began her first steps in the world of djing during the post-pandemic 2021 as a selector and event organizer with the CVLT-O platform team. During this time she has collaborated with some collectives and concepts of the city and Queretaro, such as Terror Clash, Sintetika Secuencia, Modular Fm, Tanzqualität, Disociados Media, Tenebra Market, Pagan Love Song, El Portal del Underground and soon with Misa Negra. In addition to these collaborations she has performed in clubs and underground forums in the city, such as La Mezcalli, Black Centro Cultural, Centro de Salud, Dada X Club, La UTA, Galería Venenoise, Aquelarrem, Cervecería Bazooka, Mixcoac 53, Foro Mary Jane, San Diablo, Xolo foro bar, La casa del Marqués and in the old plantón 420 (located in Reforma).

Her musical selection is full of electronic beats, rough and vibrant, ranging from EBM, industrial, indie dance, and dark disco, with light lines of Darkwave and Italo body. These dark but always danceable sequences have allowed her to share the stage with national and international artists such as Ductape and Delectro, Andrés Ruíz, L, El ojo y la Navaja, Silis, Werner Karloff, Neolin, Energy Dance Lovers, Black Cats, Estrellita mi alegría, Oscura Daemonia among others.
Now, we have had the opportunity to cast her in our series of mixes entitled Cintas Furiosas. Reaching the 50th edition, Empusa this time adds our Cintas Furiosas in endless darkness and uncontrollable dances.

Our mix series is called Cintas Furiosas – Furious Tapes, in English. They are inspired by the band from the cult film The Warriors (1979) called Baseball Furies, and the scintillating Imperator Furiosa, the iconic character from the fourth installment of the Mad Max saga, Fury Road (2015), and now too from the Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024). Conceived as tapes that express a “furious sound”, both as a metaphor and as a sonic process, they acquire a special and unique fury with each artist they feature. With Empusa, the result is very dark and very electric.

The beginning is imposing and full of all those beats that we love so much from Dark Electronics, and its multiple rhythms and combinations. Constant and always keeping the pulse of the rhythm, conscious of visible and invisible audiences. With precise handling of the crossing and the transition between tracks, and with atmospheres that remain under the underground world. With spectacular highlights that recharge the dancefloor and the dance.

And from between highly electrified and metallic arms, comes the core of our Cinta Furiosa, modulating the rhythm, and dyeing it with fine strands of static dynamism. It is time to let ourselves be submerged by sound, putting our words to sleep; maximizing our perception, that the art of sound appears there when the senses are sharpened and language is numbed. Before us, we have a sound that is worth listening to with the whole body, in the midst of an unbeatable selection and a mastery of the decks that is much appreciated.
