Counter Pulse acts as a corrector of the contemporary course of events in the international Techno scene. Their ongoing focus on quality underground music, independent of the cultural trends of the month, serves as a mediator for craftsmen with an authentic cause on the more industrial side of Techno who have yet to find a modern edge.
This is evident in each of his releases, among which one of our favorite producers, Empath, showcases power and sonic versatility. He presents Break The Protocol on the Swedish label, a collection of four original tracks with rather suggestive titles.
Menthol Hammer is the closing track of this release. Menthol is an alcohol extracted from the essence of peppermint, with analgesic and antiseptic properties. While a hammer is a percussion tool composed of a head, usually made of iron, and a handle, usually made of wood, which is used for striking. So both have conflicting qualities and functions.
Imagining a menthol hammer is, of course, a metaphor, but also a way of describing the sound: one that is dual, paradoxical. Strength and hardness on the one hand, and freshness and softness on the other. Such is the sound of this track, within which these two rhythmic tracks run parallel. Sound velvets to lull the heart and the world, which is on fire enough as it is.
