The Techno Time Traveller Cat: cat can do presents «Detroit Knows» on Lett Records

Our beloved cat, who ran so fast from Canada that he ended up arriving in Spain (Alicante) continues to purr loudly. We are talking about cat can do, who, this time, is presented on the spectacular French label Lett Records with Detroit Knows, an EP that, in the words of the label’s director, will transport us directly to Detroit, where Techno and Funk made sound synthesis.

cat can do not only produces music, but also channels the essence of techno’s past and future. He is a «time-travelling cat» who, from his studio in Alicante, Spain, immerses himself in the roots of Detroit techno. Among the many machines he owns, he manages to design and build a sonic time machine, which manages to go to Detroit. Detroit Knows is an album that not only pays homage but also knows and reinterprets the legacy of the genre.

From Spain and up to Canada and then Detroit, or conversely, from Detroit, then Canada, arriving in Spain, a spatial bridge is woven in which cat can do fuses its Canadian-Spanish origin with the raw and authentic sound of Detroit. This is palpable in the eponymous track, which bears the stamp of the artist’s sound, while at the same time managing to finely and subtly weave the sounds of Detroit.

Long Ride To Minneapolis is also symptomatic in this respect. If we map this city to Detroit and Canada, we are looking at a triangle of travel, not only sonically but physically as well. The sound of this track is calmer, and its intensity is velvety. It is about the journey of the sound and the artist that becomes an evocation, not only personal but also artistic. A long journey that so far has allowed our beloved cat to enhance his art, both at the level of design and at the level of its extension.

Over Exposure is a more than explicit nod to the art of perfect imperfection: in times when many artists say that there is no longer any difference between computer programmes and analogue music production devices in terms of the sound produced – it remains to be seen if and how this is always the case – for this writer, machines will always allow for a more faithful and honest sound. Is this not the case in many cases in art? In such a way that the use of machines and synthesizers feels organic and soulful, a nod to the analogue sound of techno’s golden age.

Refractive Messures reminds us that the dancefloor in those times and places was not frenetic, gun-toting, meaningless, soulless sounds. The dancefloor is a destination that can be reached by multiple means, mediated, progressive, and amid unstable machines, those made of nuts and metal, and those made of flesh and blood.

This album, despite its influences, is designed for the here and now, with a clear historical awareness of underground music, with a focus on «dancefloor-oriented electro». So once again, cat can do excels in versatility, sonic identity, and influences, with a fresh and unique approach to their new release.
