The concept from which we start in this review is based on the fact that «Funky Emotion» is not a one-off release, but an exciting meeting point for artists who already have a history of their own, in their place of origin and wherever they have decided to move. It can be seen, on the one hand, as the culmination of a musical narrative in which these artists have decided to join forces, not only in this release, but in the direction and collaboration of the label.
Reginald and Empath are not just simple collaborators, but figures whose trajectory is already quite experienced. If they each have well-defined artistic backgrounds, their collaboration can only collide to create a more powerful sonic universe. The central point is the result of this union. The individual sound of each artist is transformed into something new and vibrant. The «funky emotion» of the album is not just the title, but the sonic manifestation of this synergy. It’s the «who’s who» of the underground, but on a single disc.
The original mix presents psychological and acidic breakdowns in micro-doses that ensure long-term delirium. Broken percussions, and intermittent electrics that know how to come to life at the right moment, after mental and bodily misplacements, that have left us in semi-abandoned streets, but in the right ones to continue the reunion. This situation brings with it its emotional correlate: Funk, which is the starting and ending point.
Megaforce jacks in the industrial warehouses of Berlin, Germany, from where he produces hellish Techno and Rave music. Industrial sounds, mixed with Rave atmospheres in the middle of abandoned warehouses, and late at night. Sound that doesn’t diminish in intensity, and only grows. Bee swarms constantly buzzing in our perceptions, and floors that shake harder and harder. And an overwhelming sound that hammers with power and attitude.
Mesak takes the sound to the IDM-universe, with a badass attitude, and slow tempos that magnify the possibilities of reality and artisticity that the sound proposes as a whole. These temporalities take us little by little into another reality, opening the cracks of the real reality towards the fictitious reality, which now becomes reality.
This is what the collision of sound forces with overwhelming results is all about. Reginald, Empath, Mesak, and MEGAFORCE present Funky Emotion, a collaboration of the first two, remixed by the last two, for the newly created label, Platypus.
A second-order observation that has led to the introduction of this new label, led by great artists, some of whom we have been following for some time now. Their versatility, complexity, and variations are complementary and contrasting, creating something unexpectedly cohesive and danceable. This album is the start of something new. This collaboration proves that the universe of artists in the underground electronic scene is more alive than ever and constantly evolving.
