An important element of every artist is the way in which their life experiences take particular form in a concrete expression of art; in this case, electronic music. Such is the case with the new release of our favorite cat, cat can do, who presents his new vinyl on Diffuse Reality Records, emotional/après, a collection of six original tracks plus a remix.
cat can do, through emotional/aprés, not only creates music, but becomes a «sound archaeologist.» Instead of excavating artifacts, he unearths audio fragments from his familiar past (voices, laughter, phrases) and molds them into new creations, giving them a second life through electronic music. It is a way of preserving the memory of his parents and grandmother through art.
From the beginning, VHS tapes from our beloved cat’s family past are encoded into electro-techno electronica, in such a way that the artist transforms a medium of the past (old family videos) into a sound of the present. venir avec nous, and usually a red light in it plays with the magic of sampling a voice from years ago and turning it into the basis of a modern theme. This time, the nostalgic past, often in synthesis of sadness and happiness, is enhanced in the midst of positive and very energetic energies, with drops of electricity splashing with freshness; without forgetting the qualities that come with the past.
après plays with the inevitable becoming of the present and the future, and the unassailable past being of the past. In these conditions, sound becomes the refuge of memory: sound, instead of being cold and mechanical, is deeply human and personal, an interesting contrast to the genre, in which technology and gadgets often seem to come from machine souls and artificial beings. Music becomes the place where memories reside and come alive again.
emotional becomes serendipity, as it tells the story of how his grandmother’s phrase, «cinq boites, cinq euro», reversed itself to «magically» become the word «emotional». Here is the soul of the album, the «eureka moment» that gave name and soul to the album; where the greatest intensity of cat can do‘s emotions and feelings are played out; or more precisely, where they reach their peak and climax.
While the remix of emotional deepens in all its aspects: sounds, concepts, meanings. It is about the total loss in the past, the one that we would like not to return, or to return to be eternalized. The brevity with which we experience it in the present makes it a highly valued asset. For this reason, Sean takes the liberty of losing himself infinitely in it.
au revoir Sean is a literal farewell. However, neither the meaning nor the addressees of this farewell are clear; it is the magic of art that allows one to create fictitious realities from real realities. It is also the track that plays with total abandon with the machines and devices of the Canadian artist; cables, buttons, synergies coming and going, as well as the past, the memory, and the past, which always come and go.
In short, it is an intergenerational dialogue, in which cat can do‘s music is a dialogue between his creative present and the voices of his family. It is not just an album; it is a musical time capsule full of feelings.
