When Club Furies immersed itself for the first time in the sonic universe of emesh, the project of Antonio Muñóz, it was to find those invisible connections between the ancestral and the techno of the future. If in ‘oreq‘ the artist showed us his ability to fuse ancient history with industrial solidity, now, it’s our turn to get into the whole of «zayith«, his most recent work, in which he takes this concept to a higher, deeper, and transcendental level.
«Zayith» is not just an album; it is an immersive experience. The title, which translates as «olive tree» in Hebrew, is the key that opens a portal to a sound that is both organic and sacred. Each of the ten tracks is a journey that transports us, just like the olive oil that, in anointing rituals, served as a bridge between the mortal realm and heavenly grace.
Like all thoughtful work, especially in the artistic field, having a concept is key. The first track, ‘alia‘, is at the same time an introduction properly speaking, and already the unfolding of the form as such. Latent, progressive, mysterious, deep, reticent. Elements that serve as an opening to what is to come, but at the same time tell you what is already happening.
‘heara‘ shows that the industrial side of emesh’s sound, appearing explicit, yet mysterious. Not with unnecessary roughness or meaningless rough qualities. The vocal samples running in distant parallel lines feed the sonic structure, giving it a spectacular spaciousness. In the end, it all dissipates and shoots out in thin, shimmering blue bubbles that take us to other places.
‘shelim‘ is a return to darkness and is the track that gets us right into the immersive effect of its sound, with enveloping layers, which, one after the other, dictate to our senses where to go, whether we realize it or not. Speeding up at the exact moment, their metallic arms end up sealing reality. ‘masveh‘ is the Deep Techno version of its predecessor Drone/Ambient: deep, still metallic, with nicely deployed concepts and punchy sounds, which come to verge on Matrix dimensions and cybernetic apocalyptic worlds, ultimately crashing into present futures that have quickly become past futures.
‘retzono‘ shows how the olive tree is unfolding as life; in this case, as life in the form of sounds. At this point, the sound and the release have reached a point of maturity, shown as a progressive form of life, growing and developing. It’s back and forth; it shows itself in the same way as life itself. Between sadness and the unassailable reality of continuing to live, everything is happening.
And just like that, emesh shows us the other side of life, or its afterlife: when life starts to fade away. The sounds of ‘tikva‘ are taciturn, reflective, and nostalgic, with calm, patient, and quite pleasant rhythms. ‘omek‘ is the conceptual and sonorous radicalization of ‘tikva‘, to the extent that it takes us back to an after and a before, simultaneously, of life: what happens when it has not arrived or has already passed. Its sounds border on Experimental, Ambient, and subtle sophistication, amidst fine and delicate metals, which flex to give power to the sound.
The sound of ‘makabi‘ begins to take the olive tree and life itself into extraterrestrial territories. Bordering on Sci-Fi Techno, still entrenched in industrial and ambient sounds, it takes us to other worlds, showing us that life is infinite. His breaths of sonorous oxygen are clear proof of this. At the same time, it shows us the beginning of the end. tanhé otakh’ is the finale that extends in extensive and meaningful reflections.
The music of emesh on this album is a natural progression of his already known sound, but with a maturity that is felt in every beat. Here, deep techno is not just a genre, but a canvas on which he paints soundscapes with textures of nature and mechanical pulsations. It is a fascinating dialogue between tribal and psychedelic.
At the heart of «Zayith«, emesh reminds us that electronic music doesn’t have to be cold; it can be charged with history, spirituality, and an emotion that is felt from deep within. One more Sendero Records release that consolidates this label as a curator of sound experiences that transcend the simple dancefloor.
