Our favorite producer, known for his feline alias, unveils his side project, Only Wolf, with a new and ambitious album to be released by Diffuse Reality Records under their Periphylla sublabel. This release marks the fourth reference for Only Wolf since starting the project in 2014, and his first work with the Spanish label, signaling a significant shift in his artistic direction.
Normally anchored in psychedelic folk, with this new album, the sound of Only Wolf boldly delves into the realm of experimental electronics. Instead of his typical vocals accompanying his production, this album was made entirely by sampling his own voice, processed and constructed using his trusted MPC 60. He also sampled his Prophet 6 synthesizer and Tempest drum machine into the MPC, creating an intimate yet completely reimagined sonic palette.
The album, titled «paper cranes,» is composed of six original tracks whose title is highly suggestive. One of the pieces that most captures attention is «everything is automated,» whose name forces us to reflect on the current state of technological development, its relentless acceleration, and the diminishing role that humans are ceasing to occupy.
The sound of this track glides with a superficial placidity, yet it is loaded with latencies that leave the listener uneasy. Its rhythmic and textural intermittence suggests that something more is lurking in the depths of the algorithm. This is likely the case, given the conceptual depth and artistic history of our favorite «wolf»: a sonic meditation on the beauty and terror of total automation.
