CF Premiere: Dark Matter Project – Acid Pain [Black Hole Transmissions]

Techno has always been a technology of time. It does not simply organise rhythm; it shapes perception—stretching, compressing, suspending it. With Space Time Emotion, Shane dB, under the Dark Matter Project moniker, operates precisely at this threshold, where rhythm ceases to function as propulsion and becomes a temporal experience.

Two years after Lost Dimensions EP (2023), a debut rooted in warehouse logic and the economy of impact, Space Time Emotion does not continue the trajectory—it displaces it. This release is set to be curated and released on Black Hole Transmissions, the label co-run by Shane dB and Solenoid. This time, there is no pursuit of accumulation or sustained climax. Instead, the EP explores groove as persistence, as duration. Rawness remains, but it no longer acts as aggression; it becomes texture.

The reworking of Is Your Love? functions as a programmatic gesture. The most recognisable track from the previous release returns in a radically transformed form: slowed tempo, softened synthesis, and the voice of Tokyo-based singer and creator Maimiko Liz, introducing a different language and corporeality. The Japanese-language version is not a cultural ornament but a reconfiguration of listening itself—the voice shifts from narrative to rhythmic matter, suspended affect within repetition.

Acid Pain operates as an internal critique of the acid techno imaginary. Rather than reproducing the canonical bassline, the track is built from riffs generated on the ANA synthesizer, displacing recognition in favour of estrangement. Acid here is neither nostalgia nor identity marker; it becomes a question: how can intensity be sustained without resorting to its most codified formulas?

This shift is inseparable from its production context. Shane dB is currently developing his doctoral research at Goldsmiths, University of London, focusing on the role of the digital audio workstation in techno production. Space Time Emotion can thus be read as a situated practice—one where tools, repetition and aesthetic decisions are deeply intertwined. There is no fetishisation of the machine, only an acute awareness of its mediation.

At a moment when techno oscillates between algorithmic functionality and hyper-accelerated consumption, this EP insists on something else: listening as duration, groove as space, and repetition as a form of thought.
