At last, we return to one of our favorite labels, both in Spain and internationally: The Machines Are Alive, a Madrid-based platform founded in 2015 by Del Valle. Since its inception, the label has distinguished itself through a radical philosophy within analog techno: releasing music exclusively on vinyl and working strictly with hardware machines, avoiding plug-ins and conventional digital production.

This choice is not merely technical but conceptual — a statement that reclaims the materiality of sound and the direct relationship between musician and machine. In 2021, the label expanded its formats by adding digital downloads and new cassette releases, while maintaining the same sonic ethos. Each release, therefore, operates as a small manifesto for raw, physical electronic music.

For its most recent release, the mysterious alias 7mwn5l33p appears — an acronym for “the man who never sleep”, built through a typographic code where letters and numbers are interchanged (7h3 m4n wh0 n3v3r 5l33p). Under this enigmatic identity comes 808 Exercises, a limited cassette edition of only 10 copies, conceived almost as a cult object. Within it, 7mwn5l33p recorded two mini sessions constructed from sequences of the classic Roland TR-808, pushed deliberately to their limits through chains of effects manipulated in real time. Rather than conventional tracks, the result resembles an exercise in rhythmic experimentation and mechanical exploration.

808 Exercise 1 is a piece of roughly 14 minutes that deliberately avoids searching for a stable pattern or a traditional rhythmic structure. Instead, the process explores the unpredictable possibilities of the machine when it is allowed to deviate from its usual function. Sounds transform constantly: echoes multiplying, distortions appearing and dissolving, repetitions overflowing, and textures emerging unexpectedly. The TR-808 ceases to function merely as a drum machine and becomes a generative system, capable of producing continuous variations within the same sonic flow.

Each take was recorded as an irreproducible event. Effect parameters were intentionally manipulated to introduce chaotic variations that alter the behavior of the sequences, meaning the final result cannot be recreated in exactly the same way. This approach turns the session into a kind of sonic experiment, where chance, feedback, and the reaction of electronic circuits become as important as the initial programming. Music emerges here as an open process rather than a fixed object.

The primary intention was to allow the system to function almost autonomously. Once the sequences and effects chain are activated, the machine continues its own sonic journey without direct human intervention. The musician acts more as the initiator of the process than as the absolute controller of the outcome. From the interaction between rhythm, feedback, and electronic processing arises a continuous stream of transformations that sustains tension throughout the piece.

The resulting tapes were recorded using Marantz equipment, adding another layer of character to the final recording. Capturing the sound on tape introduces imperfections, saturation, and slight fluctuations that enrich the texture. Rather than flaws, these elements contribute an organic dimension that reinforces the project’s analog spirit. In this way, 808 Exercise 1 stands as an exercise in exploration and listening — a piece where the initial programming gradually dissolves into an unstable rhythmic landscape, guided by the autonomy of machines and the contingency of analog sound.
