The re-entry of the form into the form: Empath presents Cream Dealer by Motto Sono Records

A week ago, we presented the premiere of the homonymous title track of Empath’s new work on Motto Sono Records, the Finnish label based in Helsinki. Cream Dealer is a collection of three tracks, which show the versatility of the artist from Tampere, traveling through auditory hypnosis with his sounds, which always break the rules of stylistic boundaries.

This time it is an unconventional work in his usual sound line, one that in itself -I must say- is always changing and always of high quality. Cream Dealer is completed with Kicked Out and Caged Baby Universe, titles that already tell us a little about the carefree sound of this work. It plays with an old-schoolish style -disco, funk- amidst contemporary sounds within house, electro, acid, techno.

Spring in many parts of the world represents the arrival of warmth and coziness after the cold of autumn and winter. Not so in boreal or northern countries, where the cold is constant. Cream Dealer represents the re-entry of form into form: that is, how warmth makes room in the cold. Not so much in thermal terms but in sound coordinates.

A synthetic beginning that represents the two sides of the form: explicit dance tracks amidst hypnosis and velvety coldness. All the while, cross-cutting layers of classical and contemporary sounds. That’s what the eponymous track is all about. Choose your side; the dance or the ethereal, or both…

Kicked Out combines Techno gruffness with Funky flashes and thick percussions, amidst precise vocals and Old School tinges. It’s groovy, sexy, exciting, and very sweaty. It’s leaning towards the explicit side of the sound of this work. Want to dance and rave? This is your track. And the mood and rhythm will always be nuclear due to the coupling of sonic layers that cause, always, curiosity and exhilaration. The sound finally achieves clubby-antique visual correlates, the kind that take us back to the once glorious times of the electronic music of the eighties and nineties.

The sound of Caged Baby Universe is somewhat enigmatic and cryptic. At times, it seems to place itself in some of the club sounds that made Berlin what it is today. At times it seems to dilate on that MTV alternative rock of the early 2000s; at times on the yearnings of electronica, which knows that much of what it could have remained in its blueprint for the future. And from between these two poles that form a sonorous pendulum, a mysterious, reticent, unassailable story emerges.
