In a global landscape scarred by artificial borders and the brutal legacy of colonialism, the act of creating music becomes more than an artistic pursuit; it transforms into a vital gesture of defiance and reconnection. “Fake Lines: Sono Levant,” a monumental 36-track compilation, emerges not merely as a collection of songs, but as a powerful, organized sound front against fragmentation. It stands as a direct challenge to the colonial “fake lines” that have divided communities, cultures, and sovereignties, particularly in the Levant.
Born from a place of rage and a profound sense of urgency during the ongoing genocide in Gaza, this project is the sound of the diaspora and the conquered reasserting their shared identity. The compilers confess it began as an attempt to counter feelings of uselessness, yet the resulting void remains—a testament to the scale of the crisis it responds to. What fills that space, however, is not silence, but a roaring, multifaceted symphony of solidarity.
“Fake Lines: Sono Levant” unites a formidable array of artists from the fractured Levant and its global diaspora, with crucial contributions from allies in Tunisia, Algeria, Iraq, Turkey, France, Venezuela, Italy, and India. The sonic territory covered is as vast and interconnected as the cause it supports. The compilation journeys through the raw textures of folk, the daring frontiers of experimental rock, the potent word of hip-hop, and the immersive realms of ambient and electronica, refusing to be confined by genre—just as its philosophy refuses to be confined by borders.
This is more than music; it is a bold cultural act of non-compliance. It is the sound of a network choosing to re-weave what imperialism sought to tear apart. Each track serves as a node in a larger circuit of artistic solidarity, amplifying a shared history and an unwavering demand for a different world—a world without lines drawn between people, where priorities are aligned with justice and collective development.
In a crucial alignment of principle and action, the majority of the revenue generated from “Fake Lines: Sono Levant” will directly support grassroots organizations in Palestine. The project has designated proceeds to the Arab Group for the Protection of Nature (APN) and their essential initiative, Revive Gaza’s Farmland—a project dedicated to restoring agricultural life and food sovereignty in the strip. The remainder of the revenue will be fairly distributed among the participating artists.
“Fake Lines: Sono Levant” is not an escape from a grim reality, but a deep engagement with it. It is the sound of resistance, resilience, and the unbreakable bonds of a shared identity, echoing through every beat, melody, and verse. This is essential listening for anyone who believes in the power of sound to dismantle walls and sow the seeds of a freer future.
“Released via Fake Lines, a non-profit record label established during the genocide in Gaza, and in collaboration with music distribution platform Proton Radio, this project ensures that neither party takes royalties, prioritizing fundraising and the artists.
This album is dedicated to nasheed musician Hamza Abu Qenas and his friends, who was murdered by the zionist occupation on October 14th, 2024. On his last social media post, he was joking around with Ismail and Anas, saying: “If we are martyred make a song for us”.
