Only Wolf’s Sonic Journey to Experimental Electronics with «Paper Cranes» on Diffuse Reality’s Periphylla

Sonic evolution is a rite of passage for every true artist, a path that our favorite wolf – Only Wolf – traverses with boldness and conviction. What began in 2014 as an intimate and personal psych folk project is now transfigured into an abstract and fascinating electronic soundscape. This solitary wolf has shed its skin, exchanging the warm company of the guitar and naked vocals for the raw, sampled territory of an MPC 60.

This new chapter finds its home on Periphylla, one of the sublabels of the Diffuse Reality matrix, a label perfectly aligned with the avant-garde explored in this work. For Only Wolf, this release marks a double milestone: it is his fourth discographic installment, but the first released under this alias with the prestigious label, cementing a natural synergy for sounds that defy categorization.

The album, titled «paper cranes,» represents a radical reinvention. Abandoning its usual folk form, the work delves into the realm of cutting-edge experimental electronics. The methodology was key: the voice, previously the sung protagonist, was deconstructed and used as raw sonic material, sampled and processed within the MPC 60 ecosystem. This organic element was joined by samples from his Prophet 6 synthesizer and Tempest drum machine, weaving a texture where the human and the machine merge into a new sonic creature.

“passing notes” is an introduction typical of the work’s experimental nature, where slightly humanized mechanical babbling is transferred as gasps announcing something uncertain. An intriguing preamble that establishes the atmosphere of glitch and mystery. From his name, “everything is automated” is a stroll through the current state of the relationship between humanity and the machines it created. Its sound announces a harmonic relationship that nevertheless hints at certain latent tensions. Its sonic progression is a constant struggle between the benefits of technological development and its existential swings.

“paper cranes” is built upon well-designed sonic paper skulls, attesting to meticulous artisanal work in the design. Machines, buttons, and cables are at the service of the paper and skull metaphor, with a playful and profoundly experimental evolution. The smooth and velvety of “if I could only” sound moves us to ethereal and very relaxed environments. The electricity of the instruments is latent, modulated on very delicate rhythmic rails, offering a moment of weightlessness.

“finger paint” carries a nostalgic atmosphere, full of past subtleties in present environments that feel hopeful, rather than sad. Its patiently executed unfolding, with precise moments, heralds a «beginning of the end.» “feel the bass” is robotic, menacing, and generates palpable anticipation. Its evolution feels vast, almost infinite, creating an impatience that is not annoying, but strangely comforting. It is the bass climax of the album.

«Paper Cranes» is a map of broken and recombined sounds. It is an introspective journey where rhythm is suggested more than declared, and where the atmospheres, charged with the organic warmth of the original folk but filtered by digital precision, create a unique space. This album is not an abandonment, but a deepening; it is the essence of Only Wolf distilled through a new and powerful electronic language.
