We open 2026 with one of our favorite labels: Abstract Mechanisms, the sister imprint of Illegal Alien Records, whose name already signals the kind of sonic curation we can expect. This third premiere from the label’s first Various Artists release also marks the closing of the premiere cycle for this compilation.
There could be no better way to conclude than with Meddu, an artist from Spain based in Crevillente, Alicante, who represents a powerful example of the high-level techno sound design currently emerging from the country. His track, Erosión, delivers exactly what its title suggests.
Erosion—defined as the wear or transformation caused by continuous friction—is here translated into sound with almost physical clarity. Erosión is intense, continuous, and enduring; a relentless force whose energy feels nuclear, capable of sustaining and reproducing itself ad infinitum. These are precisely the qualities required to erode: pressure, repetition, and persistence.
But what does this track erode? Our sonic foundations, the familiar structures of functional techno. As has often been said, for art to truly be art, it must balance what is established with what is new. And while novelty is often confined to the realm of the avant-garde, art must remain avant-garde in spirit across all its expressions.
In this sense, Erosión by Meddu stands as a true work of techno sound art—a piece that wears down the ordinary and positions itself as a spearhead for a sound that fuses known layers with genuinely new ones, carving openings through which the future can emerge.
