CF Signals: Kaeba – Untouched Surfaces [Textvra Records]

Founded in Rome in 2021 by Gianclaudio Hashem Moniri, Textvra initially emerged as a platform for the sonic explorations of projects such as Plaster, Kaeba, and Clouds After Rain. Over time, the label has gradually expanded its scope while remaining faithful to the qualities that defined it from the beginning. A fascination with the intersections of experimental electronics, conceptual depth, and deeply personal narratives.

Rather than functioning as a simple collection of releases, the Textvra catalogue feels like an ongoing investigation. Each record contributes a new perspective to broader questions surrounding perception, memory, and transformation. Within that context, Lower, the latest work from Kaeba, feels perfectly at home.

The album unfolds as an introspective study of change and acceptance. Its trajectory navigates emotionally complex territories, approaching the parts of ourselves that often remain hidden beneath the surface. There is no dramatic confrontation here. Instead, the work seems interested in observing these shadowed spaces, understanding them, and gradually allowing them to become part of a larger whole.

Within that journey, Untouched Surfaces stands out as one of the album’s most evocative moments. The track appears to emerge from a distant and almost inaccessible place. A cold, suspended environment where forms have not yet fully materialised. Its opening passages drift through an atmosphere that recalls both the microscopic precision of IDM and the expansive depth of deep techno. Yet the piece never settles comfortably within either tradition. It treats them as foundations from which something less predictable can emerge.

As the composition evolves, the initial stillness begins to shift. Sounds move across the landscape like traces travelling through ancient terrain. Subtle echoes surface from deep within the mix, creating a strange sense of temporality where past and present cease to feel entirely separate. The calm that dominates much of the piece is never fully reassuring. Beneath its surface runs a persistent undercurrent of tension. Every texture, resonance, and silence carries a quiet sense of anticipation, accumulating slowly until it becomes almost tangible.

At this point, the composition enters a new phase. Delicate acid droplets begin to seep through the arrangement, subtly altering its contours without disrupting its balance. Rhythmic elements advance with the hypnotic restraint of slow techno while deep techno’s immersive spatial qualities continue to expand the listening field. What makes the track particularly compelling is the way this contemplative atmosphere constantly coexists with rougher impulses. Fragments of raw energy emerge and recede throughout the piece, reminding us that transformation often remains active even within moments of apparent stillness.

That coexistence between fragility and density, between contemplation and tension, ultimately defines the listening experience. Untouched Surfaces never attempts to resolve its contradictions. Instead, it inhabits them, allowing opposing forces to coexist until they become part of the same emotional current. Perhaps this reflects one of Textvra’s most enduring strengths. Its ability to champion works that understand electronic music not only as sound design, but as a means of exploring consciousness, inner processes, and alternative experiences of time.

With Lower, that exploration continues to expand. And in Untouched Surfaces, it finds one of its most profound expressions.
