CF Review | MAMBEC Steps Onto the Dancefloor with 846 KM² on Cochlea Music

Two musicians, two countries, one shared instinct. MAMBEC, the electronic project of guitarist Diego Barber (Granada) and percussionist Alejandro Coello (Weimar), returns with 846 KM², a four-track EP on Cochlea Music, a label that lives on the blurry frontier between house and techno, where a track could just as easily belong in a deep house set as in a techno one. They don’t aim to be pigeonholed, but that is the style that defines them most.

The duo’s own words explain the release best: after years of exploring electronic music from different angles, they felt it was time to create music for the dancefloor without compromising their approach to sound. 846 KM² is “a meeting point between club energy, experimentation, and a deeply musical perspective”, not a change of direction but a natural evolution along a path they have long wanted to follow.

That musical perspective comes from two remarkable backgrounds. Diego Barber is a composer and classical and jazz guitarist who studied at the Lanzarote Conservatory, the Salamanca Higher Conservatory of Music and the Mozarteum University Salzburg. During his years in New York City he recorded for Sunnyside and Origin Records alongside some of the finest contemporary jazz musicians, and All About Jazz praised the grandeur and majesty of his playing. Alejandro Coello is a percussionist, composer and producer who moves effortlessly between concert halls, jazz clubs and contemporary art venues. One of the youngest lecturers ever appointed at a German conservatoire, he teaches at the Franz Liszt University of Music Weimar. His works have premiered at the Berliner Philharmonie and Carnegie Hall, and range from his Percussion Opera to the album Percussion Theory, recorded alongside the legendary Simon Phillips.

The two met through Ricardo Gallén, a mutual friend and one of the world’s finest classical guitarists, and it was soon clear they shared a similar artistic vision, the same approach to making music and many of the same creative ambitions. After releasing their most recent jazz quartet album, they decided to explore electronic music fully together. Their method is live improvisation: immersive soundscapes built with the musical language and spontaneity of years spent playing jazz. All four tracks were produced at Diego’s home studio, nestled in the mountains of Granada, Spain.

MBC 21 opens this sonic universe. Delicate at first, it moves with electricity toward where the energy is, in a shift as unexpected as it is brilliant. Its structure plays with a dual texture, valleys and mountains of rhythm joined together flawlessly. MBC 24 carries the same energy and essence into different rhythmic coordinates. It takes a measured, almost reluctant overview of the whole picture and, once everything is identified, explodes with brilliant subtlety to make the dancefloor vibrate.

MBC 25 drifts toward more cinematic and nostalgic territory, shaping the release’s electricity into switches that channel the track’s inner workings. This gives it a special place in the EP: it acts as a rotor that modulates intensity and patience. MBC 26 is the synthesis of the whole release, and so its most introspective, mental and reflective moment. Modular sounds, effervescent drum machines and an attitude that plays with what was, what has been, what is and what will be make it a perfect closer that never lets go of the EP’s electricity.
