Our dear friend Empath, based in Tampere, a Finnish city nestled between the lakes of Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi, is back on our radar. Empath is one of the most accomplished producers on the techno scene today. His sound blends industrial fanfare with tantalizing shades of grooviness, topped with a smooth knack for invention that we rarely get to see in such abundance from a single talent.
Joonas Aleksi presents himself through a series of fundamental nouns: Techno, House, DNB, Leftfield, Space, Deep, Atmospheric, Tampere. It’s about his sound, his nuances, and his place of origin. This also Finnish talent is presented on our beloved Spanish label Diffuse Reality Records.
Functionals is a long play production, consisting of seven original tracks, two of which are in collaboration with Empath, and one with Ben Kama; it is accompanied by VK9’s remix and Empath’s EBM refix. The sounds of the original mixes start with track one, which serves as a catalyst for the rest of the sound: dark and ambient that expands into Drum & Bass and Techno on fresh and agile notes.
The Empath refix, as the name suggests, turns everything into EBM darkness! While the original track runs nimble and sprawling through the meadows of Tampere and Functionals, Empath’s rendition plunges the sound into menacing, ancient densities and chiaroscuro.
This quality is achieved through the tension between springs and bulbs that enhance and reproduce the primal sound amidst the proposed EBM darkness. Once the sound sets in this way, there is no stopping it. Hence the place of this track on the album: last. Its fuel seems nuclear, unstoppable.
