Club Furies Premiere: Mogo – 1989 [Tlaloc Records]

Drvg Cvltvre recently had this to say about the sound of the Mexican producer from Acambay: «One of the most overused words in electronic music, besides the often used «groovy» and «pounding», could be «hypnotic». Of course, any repetitive music with chords or tones and a constant pulse could qualify for that term. But in the case of Mogo, the alias of Mexican producer Arturo Jiménez, it has rarely sounded more true and to the point. I don’t know if it’s the soft-focus synths that suck you in or the clean, propulsive rhythms, but it works like a charm.

The fact that one of the most impressive producers in recent years has said this speaks volumes about Mogo as a producer and artist on the current global electronic scene. He owns his own record label Tlaloc Records, whose foundations are rooted in the Mexican concept that represents his indigenous origins. The label is based on minimal and techno, with a dark and experimental sound that allows for a connection between mind and spirit.

For this year 2024, its first release is called 1989, and it is a two-tracker of the boss: the eponymous and X Generation. Two titles that hold very powerful meanings, and at the same time open up to a multiplicity of content. 1989 was the year of the revolutions of 1989, which led to the end of the Soviet bloc and the victory of the Western bloc. Generation x is the generation that followed the baby boomers, whose lives were at their feet, and which precedes the millennials, whose lives are not at their feet.

As far as we can see, these are two highly charged phenomena. The sound echoes this in the form of fearless, swirling, imposing rhythms. With a seemingly slow start, it quickly climbs up to speed, never stopping. With an arid sound design, it controls the air and turns it into the dust of abandoned factories, ready to dance. Between old machines and deserted atmospheres, the Techno and Acid flashes become impure and virtuosic.

The freneticism then becomes the sonorous correlate of the facts to which the language points. What is happening in society is matched by sounds that confront it. We know that we are dealing with an extraordinary producer, who continues to show enviable artistic sophistication.
