Club Furies Premiere: Mwamwa – Treiiert [KPLR Label]

Mwamwa – pronounced mûamúa – is self-discovery through musical creation. Through a laboratory of unpredictable sound experimentation, in which complex patterns, generative synthesis techniques, and asymmetrical structures, as well as compositional resources, counterpoint, and irregular time signatures, become the substances. In the search for an ethereal style with a predominance of techno, jungle, and IDM, which also explores many other possibilities. It is a space of resistance to everyday vicissitudes and homologous hegemonic currents; a space of rebellion against predefined orders.

It is the search for answers to anguished questions and the space for the necessary catharsis to avoid losing our sanity; it is a walk through the innermost recesses of our thoughts and emotions: those that were oppressed and denied by the prevailing wave of positivity that society expects of us, those that we are not allowed to express outside the couch. It is a crossover point between philosophy, art, and science, creating small moments of maximized reality that take us beyond the limits of our imagination. It is a political statement for freedom.

It is with this overt statement, which at the same time underpins Mwamwa‘s sound and aims, that he presents himself on KPLR Label, the Mexico-based label that paves the way for 2024. Webb‘s sound emerges from complex patterns, generative synthesis techniques, and asymmetrical structures, in which the listener immerses himself in the self-discovery he espouses. Five original tracks are complemented by remixes from Andy Martin, CRØG, Fleep, Nicko Shuo, and VOMFLIEGEL.

After space travels, mental wanderings, and rhythmic, thick, and tuneful pinballs, the closing track entitled Treiiert is somehow a sonic synthesis. Loaded with all the sonic influx of the previous tracks, it positions itself in the interstices of the universe and the mind, in search of a closure, which means a new opening. Clean, but thick and dense sound, mediated by a self-assured and self-confident sound design.

Between anguish and imposed limits, the sound seeks palliation against it and to force the limits of established forms. Wandering sound, well entrenched in reliable structures and ambivalent rhythms, navigating between tunnels and labyrinths. In these spaces, the mind loses itself only to find itself; as do the answers, which are lost before they are found. But not so fast: the questions answered and the mind found only enable more questions and more straying.

It is time to listen to the Webb again. Mwamwa proves to be one of this year’s most promising emerging producers. And with this work, KPLR Label‘s curation shows an important evolution in the development of the Mexican label.
