«Techno is hard. Techno is real. Techno is honest. Techno gut you inside and out and sees you as you are». That’s how Victor Santana not only introduces himself, but that’s how he marks his being. Artist, musician, sound engineer, DJ and producer. Victor Santana is a beat selector, a musical connoisseur, a master of 4×4 techno beats who can make any audience sweat techno, anywhere.
One of the places where he can showcase all his 4×4 artistic talent is Illegal Alien Records, where he contributes a track for the eleventh installment of the Mexican label’s Deported Series. The artists chosen for this release are Ana Rs, Audio Units, Dast, Developer, DJ Dextro, Fvndo, Industrialyzer, Marco Ramos, Jheal Bashta, Jonas Kopp, KRISSFA, Maasym y Maccari for the first part, and from Mr. Shady, Perfo, Rey Brennan, Seddig, Tauceti, The Miller, The Sixth Sense, Unbekannt, Victor Santana, Vinicius Honorio, Ricardo Garduno, Xris Vavrzhina and Yoikol for the second one.
When we are faced with such an extensive compilation, both in terms of the number of artists and the number of tracks, we also face the problem of their precise description. To say, for example, that it is about the sounds of Illegal is true, but that description would fall short; to synthesize the description into one sound would erase the complexity and artistry of each track, which is vast and exceptional. That’s why we’ve chosen to pick one track – but that doesn’t mean it’s enough – to act as a hook to get you to listen to the whole compilation once it’s released.
Pulse is the confrontation between two parties balanced in their strengths, who hold different interests or points of view, while the pulse width is the variety of pulse due to an arterial expansion in width, greater than normal. What is it that is confronted and what is it that causes the expansion of width in Victor Santana‘s Pulsewidth?
There is always a tension in the sound of this track, pitting delirium and absolute madness against its insightful, restrained mediation. Naively we might think that why mediate the former if electronic music shouldn’t limit freneticism and hedonism, right? Think of all those parties and raves that swarm the world over. While this is true, so is the fact that electronic music disinhibits freneticism not only through frenetic sounds, or enables delirium not only through delirious sounds.
That is the genius of Victor Santana‘s sound design. To take us to the hedonism of the most underground raves and parties currently existing -and why not those that ceased to be in the past- through sounds that tension each other delirium/delirium mediated, freneticism/freneticism mediated. While the width of the pulse is positioned in how tense these two elements are. Which will be decided on the dance floor.
