Temporize is an electronic music label, based in Palermo, Italy, that focuses on producing diverse and left-wing electronic music without borders. Led by Scottish DJ Maiú, they present their new release.

Planned as a two-act play, Scenes From is Gruth‘s third solo album, following 2020’s Somnum Exterreri and 2018’s Laments. Written in São Paulo and Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, between 2018 and 2021, it deals with the musical study of anxiety. Consisting of eight scenes, which are experimentations that preceded the pandemic-time collaboration All That We See or Seem.

Gruth is Juha Puuperä‘s electroacoustic music project, rooted in the Nordic darkness of metal, industrial and classical music, as well as sound system culture. With influences from diverse musical cultures, practices, and genres, Gruth‘s sound has evolved from avant-garde techno, ritual ambient, and doom-industrial to full-length «sound paintings», in which improvised long takes and field recordings overlap and slowly evolve.

Scenes From ranges from feverishly dreamy ambient pieces to ritualistic industrial doom; from experimental black metal to neo-classical; the album moves from one scene to the next like a story. The sonic palette used in Act I is more aggressive and overwhelming, while the delirious calm of Act II shows a different emotional energy.

Throughout the two acts, various instruments and techniques are explored: field recordings merge with electric guitars, and granular synthesis, as well as KuJo‘s violin, cello, and kantele recordings and Igor Souza‘s throat singing.

One of the unwanted effects in the context of the significance of this work, and following the name of this track, is that of absolute abhorrence. If one thinks about it, it is clear why, since it leads to an ennui that is annoying to oneself. However, it is sometimes difficult to realize that one has fallen into it; even if one realizes it, it can be difficult to get out of it. And of course, it couldn’t be otherwise, because it is an unwanted effect.

The sound of our premiere accounts for all of this in sound, capable of shaping sensations and emotions as deep as those it enunciates. With impeccable and very striking sound design, the whole work, not just this track, is in every sense of the word state-of-the-art sound art. Layer upon layer, emotion upon emotion, the complexity of the sonic structure formed is such that it stands out profoundly. Scenes From is not the faint-hearted but should calm the nerves of those in the mood for something more challenging. It certainly does.
