The style of the Canadian producer, currently based in Spain, is very characteristic. And this is mainly due to the way he produces his music: with machines, keyboards, rhythm boxes, synthesizers, which are also dominated by the yoke of studied and expert improvisation. In other words, it’s not a matter of just letting yourself go, but of knowing how to do it, even if the improvisation has a lot of it.
Once again, he presents himself on Diffuse Reality Records, the Spanish label that has an excellent curation and an immense catalogue, far from the mainstream hubbub, close to the sometimes desolate mainstream. This time it’s ALASKA II, a collection of three original tracks. The first of them, how peacocks kiss, is an introduction full of placidity and announcements to be unveiled. Always with the freshness and electricity of our most human cat. Sound sheets that unfold patiently, without any haste, and with an enviable tenacity in control of the machine.
Blue dunes quickens the pace, and with it our heartbeat. Of subtle excitements and delicate electricities, the texture is richer in layers and with more vivid and plural emotions. After all, what the title refers to already tells us something about it. So much so that the sound reaches climaxes that seem to be the very feeling of cat can do, as if its heart is in its sounds. That is the brilliance of an artist when their sound conveys something, and not in a gratuitous way, but truly said.
Departure is equally clear in its sounds, as what it refers to usually causes negative feelings and sensations. Such is the beginning of the track, which makes its origin from decay. Nevertheless, in the retreat, one must be able to see the good. Such is the brightness with which this track takes off on its revitalising flight, which, it seems, alludes to a moment of impasse in the life of every person. The track returns to rest on warm plains, after the rhythmic boom, after which it refreshes the perspective. The track finally achieves a chaotic synthesis, probably a retrospective of what has been experienced, which ends up leaving the atmosphere bubbling
