Dope Tones Records is a brokenbeat, jazz, and house music label run by Fred Ficus, based in Strasbourg, France. For their latest release, they are set to release a new UK Garage EP by neo-soul singer Lara Issa.
«I’m just a nightingale singing,» is how Lara, also based in the French city, defines herself; a member of the Omezis collective. Lara Issa mixes soul codes with house grooves, disco, and broken beat. A true tribute to the neo-soul scene, inspired by artists such as Hiatus Kaiyote, Little Dragon, and Mac Miller, the singer reveals herself with a spellbinding voice on tracks that are soulful.
The EP on the label, which already has support from Laurent Garnier, Lefto, Pablo Valentino, among others, includes the original UKG track «I Couldn’t«, along with a more intimate acoustic version. It also includes two remixes: a UKG by groovy, laid-back pianist and producer Midva, and a deep, dancefloor-friendly remix by Ficus, with heavy bass lines and a final Amen Breaks take-off for the heads.
Midva is a pianist and producer based in Strasbourg (France), who, with his interpretation, manages to reconvert the subtlety and velvet sound of the original track, delicate and sweet as it is, into more electric notes, more house, more broken beat. With this, he achieves a unique interpretation of an already very original song.
