Hailing from Rome, Italy, Black Shapes presents itself under the ethos «Lost in Monochrome Where sound finds its shadow». A recent discovery for our platform, the label continues to impress us with its sonic vision. Just days after hosting the premiere for Doriko—one of our favorite emerging artists—we present the full review for the fourth installment of their multi-artist series, titled ZERO FOUR. The release unfolds as a high-intensity journey traversing distinct spectrums of contemporary techno.

The EP opens with TAOYEMA, who redefines dancefloor impact through a direct, visceral premise: turning sound frequencies into a physical, immersive experience. Conceived as a vehicle for collective catharsis, the producer crafts pieces where acoustic pressure and rhythmic precision converge to rattle soundsystems, move bodies, and accelerate the club’s pulse. His approach balances unrelenting force with an electrifying emotional charge, positioning him as a driving force in vanguard electronic music.

«Dark Necessity», by the French producer, delivers an unforgiving, uncompromising cut tailored for peak-hour darkness. Following a muted introduction that acts like a slow-burning fuse leading to detonation, the track bursts open with a mass of industrial techno that overwhelms the listener while maintaining suffocating tension. Originating from rugged, ancient textures reminiscent of deep, damp caverns, the sound takes its time to build, steadily climbing toward the night’s apex. Navigating the harshness of the rhythm through winding peaks, the track locks into high-impact stability.

As the tempo drops into deeper pulses, the release descends into the dark density of «INHERENT», a track bridging fluid acid dub with the surgical precision of deep techno. This transition sparks hypnotic trances across the floor as late hours settle in—a well-crafted hypnosis that stays grounded, avoiding bottomless pits to strike exact coordinates in both the dancefloor and the psyche.

The journey continues with Doriko‘s contribution, elevating sonic weight through a pulse akin to a heartbeat. Closing out the release, K-SEA expands the atmosphere into a cosmic voyage anchored in timeless acid-progressive foundations. Defined by a dense, liquid texture with fluid boundaries, the composition wraps itself in a veil of melancholy, cementing its status as a cornerstone of the record.
