Elephant Gait Music presents Gulf Of Mexico EP, the latest release from Mexico City-born artist ANIMAM, now based in Playa del Carmen. The six-track release moves through a sonic landscape shaped by the relationship between nature, technology and cultural memory, bringing together original productions with remixes by Marseille-based Pierre Labret and Elephant Gait affiliate Golden Axe. Across the EP, the Gulf of Mexico becomes more than a geographical reference: it becomes a space through which ANIMAM explores how a change in environment can reshape the way music is created and experienced.

The release unfolds through three original pieces that approach this relationship from different angles. “Yocu” turns toward Mayan ceremonial traditions and the balance between civilization and nature; “Ravvadobb,” featuring Argentine musician Artifex, traces the influence of reggae and dub across Mexico’s Caribbean coast; while “Ecosistema” explores the meeting point between technological production and the natural world. The remixes expand these ideas further, with Golden Axe taking “Yocu” into darker dub territory and Pierre Labret offering two contrasting interpretations of “Ecosistema.”

For this Club Furies Signal, we focus on “Yocu,” a trance-driven piece built around the idea of mental sharpness, nature and ancestral memory. One of its most distinctive elements is a recording of a Mayan story told by a shaman in the jungle of El Cuyo, Yucatán, recounting the tale of Yum Balam, the great guardian jaguar of the milpas. The voice gives the track a remarkable sense of place, while the hypnotic electronic framework creates a space where the spoken story and the rhythm seem to coexist on their own terms.

There is something particularly compelling about the way “Yocu” allows these different temporalities to meet. The track moves through trance, ritual and electronic repetition, creating an atmosphere that feels both physical and contemplative. ANIMAM describes Gulf Of Mexico as a reflection of his own move from Mexico City to Playa del Carmen, as well as a statement about the value of Mexico’s musical and natural heritage. “Yocu” captures that idea with unusual clarity: a piece where the jungle, the dancefloor and an ancestral story occupy the same sonic space.
