Subsist Records opens its archives once again with REW 02, the second chapter of the label’s rewind series. The compilation looks back at material from its early years, some of it originally released more than a decade ago, while bringing in previously unreleased tracks from several of the artists who have crossed paths with the label. Jeroen Search, Mattias Fridell, Luis Ruiz, A4, Izars, and Fran Hartnett come together here for a release that connects different points in Subsist’s catalogue.
Hartnett contributes No Undo to the vinyl edition, while three additional tracks appear as digital bonuses: Subscan, Zebra, and Subscan. The release carries that familiar Subsist idea of digging through its own history and finding material that still has something to say in the present. There is a certain pleasure in seeing these older catalogue connections resurface through a compilation that feels more like an active archive than a static retrospective.
Our premiere is Fran Hartnett — Subscan, a track built around a stripped-down techno language where repetition, pressure, and small rhythmic movements do most of the work. Its elements stay close to the bone, allowing the groove to develop without unnecessary decoration. There is a physical quality to the track that places its focus firmly on rhythm and momentum, with the kind of restrained tension that can quietly take over a room.
REW 02 arrives as another turn through the Subsist catalogue, bringing past releases and unreleased material into the same space. For Hartnett, Subscan adds another piece to that history, resurfacing as part of a compilation that keeps the label’s early language in motion. Rewinding the Subsist archives, one track at a time.
