«I am techno» is more than a credo. It is a call to the dancefloor from a singular musician, whose ancestry is Detroit techno of the eighties, and who expresses a life lived today amidst electro, industrial and ambient excursions. Pulse is key, but so are melody and layered appeal. The past is a treasure. Today a cat can do more.
Hailing from Vancouver, cat can do is based in Spain, and is the project of Sean Parker that presents the new vinyl plate on Diffuse Reality Records. This is the second volume of the M SERIES, consisting of thirteen original tracks, five of which are available in the physical edition and the rest in the digital one.
Writing about M30, one of the songs in this second volume, was difficult for me. Initially, it did not ipso facto arouse any visual correlates or clearly identifiable emotion or feeling. This is unusual since we normally have either or both to materialize the immateriality of sound. And the sound of this track is strangely sophisticated so that it slips through the hands of light or inattentive ears.
Amidst the clattering machines and careful sound design, it is cloaked in mystery and disorder. Once you get into the essence of the sound, you are delighted – that’s what happened to me – and one play after another, your heart is fuller and your ears more enchanted. And the fact is that, if one goes from the first reproduction, stranged at what one didn’t know had happened, the second, the third, and so on until one gets lost in the number of reproductions, one literally comes to love it.
Subtlety and sophistication never had a purer meaning in M30. Let’s wait for the vinyl and the rest of the release, which should be one of the best at the beginning of the year.
