Club Furies Review | Eclectic Sounds Come Alive from a New Label: Departamento Records present Multifamiliar 1

In Mexico, multi-family housing was proposed to replace the precarious housing of the low-income working-class population. At the same time, its appearance in the city led to the transformation of collective relations, the urban landscape, and the valuation of space. Its precursors were Parque Lascuráin, El Buen Tono (1911), and the Edificio Condesa (1917). One could say that it is the collective conjunction of private-individual spaces. This requires collective efforts on the part of individuals to achieve harmony among all.

A flat is each of the parts into which any territory, building, vehicle, box, etc. is divided. A multi-family house can be made up of flats. This is the materiality that Departamento Records, the music label based in Mexico City – at Álvaro Obregón 154 -, redefines. Departamento Records is the official record label of Departamento Studio Bar.

After seven years, the studio – which stands out for its live performances and its space dedicated to art – has decided to take the leap as a record label. After seven years of live music, the community of artists and friends is immense, so it is only natural to showcase their talent on the «Departamento» label, which is also complemented by a special selection of recordings from the studio’s early days.

What are the elements we will see in Departamento Records if we look at its qualities as a studio? Improvisational approach, a meeting point for eclectic projects by musicians from all over the world; experience and community built; that’s the space and the spirit that will characterize it. For their first release, they present the first volume of Multifamiliar, a various artists compilation of twelve original tracks. The sounds?

Fiero Du Mosca presents Baja with the collaboration of Goyele, Mendrix, and Roderic, a track whose rhythms and atmospheres lower our heartbeats to placid and semi-trippy terrains. Electricity is a fundamental part of the sound, only it is of a tremendous subtlety that makes your skin crawl – imagine that.

Jiony, for his part, with his In Between provokes attentive listeners and Middle Eastern environments with vocals whose extension is deep, and their reverberation is absent. His sound strands seek out the chinks through which the perceiver of his sound waves can slip. Everything has begun – be assured of that.

Roderic‘s Presente with the collaboration of Fiero Du Mosca, Mendrix, and Chris Montgomery is an ode to the organic electricity of the sound world – without cables or machines. «How to be in the present without the sine qua non-elements of the present» is the paradox from which his sound starts. And from there to sensual and sophisticated ritual dances: subtlety in crescendo and corporeal velvets that take us to the beautiful delirium – the best: the track lasts more than eight minutes, a real precise temporal extension.

Midsection‘s TR12 is the resolution of the paradox imposed by the previous track: machines as a condition of sonic possibility. In charge are the acid keys and knobs of untamed subtlety and enchanting rhythmic springs. In the end, the dance awakens the listener, turning him into a raver on the dancefloor.

Alejandro Veneno with Fiero Du Mosca remind us of the ethereal character of the sound with a quite palpable reference: Fierro – «iron» in English. Almost idyllic and ineffable voices take us to the non-linguistic reality of sound. In its becoming, it is electrified by neon drops and magical skies. Nostalgias that take us back to our adolescence – just to the beautiful moments of that stage: love, sexual awakening, recklessness, immaturity – all qualities, of course.

Rafatel‘s TJ is in a way the continuation of the previous track: carefree, fresh, and with teenage nostalgia flashes – only this time surrounded with city night lights. Amidst such energy and ease, the body frees itself from social ties and empty norms: it is itself in the midst of others.

Casa†Negra and Amnl Prnt achieve an enviable sonic connection, with rhythms and atmospheres overflowing with sophistication and sensuality mediated by delicate reticence. Undoubtedly, they perform a performative act, as their Chemistry achieves brutal chemistry: bodies turned into sound waves that swirl in their sound, achieving a powerful reaction to the sound of an impregnable voice.

Maria Nocheydía‘s True to Time achieves a different kind of chemistry and sonic symbiosis, also impeccable in terms of sophistication and delicacy. This time with rhythms that faintly but explicitly form sonic mountain ranges with fleeting peaks, fading in parallel to Maria‘s sweet voice. The sound behaves according to its time: contemporary and modern.

Chief Don Alex Albert presents a beautiful utopia that plays with different times in parallel: El Pasado es del Futuro becomes the sonic conception of past futures and projective atmospheres set in cyberpunk and nostalgic flashes – an exciting paradox. Sand, sun, night, and stars become the elements through which the sound takes shape and thickens progressively, leading us to relentless limited horizons.

Tiempo de Maldad‘s synthesizers take us out of that futuristic hypnotism, sucking us in with machine-like electricity on their Waxfloor, and the knobs are manipulated so intensely that they become like wax poured on the floor. What will the dancer do with it?

Future Feelings‘ funk odyssey with Riding with the Scene is a long journey, abounding in adverse and traveler-friendly adventures, full of soul, jazz, Ibero-American rhythms, and R&B. The result for the listener/dancer is mental and bodily journeys that become real as the sound moves forward. It is the beginning of the end, taking us to fantastic and faraway places, just as Departamento Records will – and already is – doing.

Marco Paul and Fancy MF‘s collaboration with Free Hamze and Chucky Elk, Getting Used To My Ever Changing Self, gives a manifesto-like account of the changing nature of things, and thus of Departamento‘s studio bar, now transformed into a record label. The sounds are just right for it: confident, assured, and definite.

This is an eclectic and varied musical portfolio that highlights the diversity of styles and genres present in the Studio Bar Departmento‘s community of artists. From electronic beats to organic and contemporary sounds, this compilation offers a unique selection of songs that capture the creative and fascinating essence of that space. So why take a detour through the boring definition of what a multi-family and a flat are? That is one way to understand the concept of Departamento Records and its Studio Bar: through communion from individuality, only possible through joint and continuous coordination and cooperation.
