Founded in late 2016, Alt Orient was established to create a home for alternative electronic music from West Asia and Africa. Covering a wide range of electronic sub-genres (Indie Electronica, House, Organic House, Downtempo, Techno, Avant Garde, Experimental and everything in between). Over the years, the label has released electronic music by artists from Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Palestine, Iran, Georgia, Morocco, Greece and Albania. Previously operating as Souq Records – from 2016 to 2021), it now presents its new release, which we are eagerly awaiting.

Following the groundbreaking debut album from Georgian singer-songwriter Dionysus VS Tamada – for which we had a full review – Georgian singer-songwriter and producer Tamada has announced his second album, 9 Deadly Sins for Tamada, available for sale on 4 July 2024. Tamada, named after the traditional Georgian emcee, continues to explore and redefine the boundaries of electronic music with his unique blend of experimental sounds and deeply rooted cultural influences.

His latest work, 9 Deadly Sins for Tamada, is an intriguing conceptual journey through nine original sins, each represented by a track on the album. These sins come from society and reflect social, personal, and cultural experiences. Tamada says that «without these sins, Tamada would not exist». Written between 2020 and 2024, each song delves into these newly defined sins, offering listeners a deeply personal and philosophical experience. Tamada‘s lyrics, reminiscent of ancient Georgian toasts, address contemporary social issues, accompanied by innovative electronic compositions that fit Tamada‘s signature perfectly.

The first track, Dao, or treason, is a subtle approach to that sin. It can be crude, explicit, frontal, or subtle and delicate. With Tamada‘s voice charmingly carrying us along, betrayal becomes a sine qua non of existence, amidst tightly woven sonic strands. This marks an opening full of sonic subtleties and magical vocals.

Shveba or the disobedience of geometry can express that world that exists, that is far from the domain of mathematics. As the Little Prince said: «Those of us who understand the world make fun of numbers.» Fine sonorous strings, in the midst of equally fine percussions, form an enchanting rhythmic glow, difficult to avoid. And among the warm sounds and rhythms, sound becomes the ineffability of the ethereal.

Tamami, or to hide, is sometimes a response to fear or the unknown. We then prefer to hide in order not to face it. The intensity of the rhythm of this song may be the emotional correlate of this situation, which can involve a significant shot of adrenaline. However, the song’s lyrics give us that other side: resilience and the ability to stand up for ourselves, with electrifying and self-confident strings.

Pachi-Puchi, or arrogance can invade us in a capital or a small way. With a brash sound design and high-pitched vocals, we see why arrogance is the title of this track. Self-confidence that crosses the threshold; sound design that makes an impact; and cool atmospherics that show what a directed swagger can do.

Kintos Song, or theft. What happens if we become an observer of the person who steals? A fresh sound, very fun, relaxed, and with bright flashes of tension. The instruments form a beautiful and enviable sound complex that forms a unique texture. The theft has stolen our hearts and souls, with such a sound structure and with Tamada‘s voice, which continues to show us in the sound who he is.

The whole instrumental sound is full, well anchored, and with a masterfulness in the execution that is spectacular. That’s what Pranchia or Flirt is all about, it manages to ignite our flame with sensual approaches and sizzling rhythms. Close your eyes, pay attention only to the sound, and the sin from which it is born, and you will find yourself in a sensational immersion.

Excuses are always necessary when we are faced with the inevitability of not being able to say no. And how do we musicalize that situation if not in a musical way? And how do we musicalize that situation if not with the sound of Turkish Coffee, an ode to coffee, with a rich semantic of meanings. All of which, whether we know it or not, invade us. That is the precision and artistic magic of this sound: it manages to make us feel it and all its meanings.

Our sins could not define us if we do not attend to lasciviousness, that immoderate appetite or propensity for carnal delights. Jinit tries to give an account of containment of that, sometimes succeeding, sometimes not. With rhythms that slip into the wild, and into unknown territories, they are also something to which sin can lead us.

Sadness completes Tamada‘s sins. Siketisken Miasma is nostalgia full of memories, present and future, as well as in our case the twilight of this second album by the Georgian artist who once again proves his artistic genius in the handling of sound. It is at the same time proof of Alt Orient‘s ability to continue presenting works full of quality, that which is more likely to be secured with what can be called alternative or underground, far from the commercial hustle and bustle.

With 9 Deadly Sins for Tamada, Tamada continues his exploration of identity, culture, and music, inviting listeners to join him on this introspective, aural adventure. The album promises to be a significant milestone in Tamada’s continuing artistic evolution.
