TOXIK Dementia is an experimental electro-industrial project by Abril Rainbow, based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Across its output, the project explores electro-industrial and dark electro while insisting on something dark music often overlooks: fun. That tension — bleak themes handled with a sense of play — runs through the work and gives it its particular character. Abril’s path of self-discovery and growth is reflected in the music, making her an innovative force in the electronic scene since 2014, with authenticity and empowerment as guiding principles.
Born in 2014 as the evolution of earlier experiments under the INU KUSAI alias, TOXIK Dementia has released all of its work through Abril’s own label, BLOOD & DEMENTIA Records. The project has appeared in Side-Line (Belgium) and Terra Relicta (Slovenia), and its music has reached listeners in more than 50 countries.
Now, for the spooky season, comes Queen of Darkness, a Halloween single featuring the voice of Ruchia — one of the few occasions when this largely instrumental project includes sung vocals. Built on heavy rhythms, aggressive synths, distorted textures and glitches, the track tells the story of a vampiress who lives in the shadows all year and only comes out on Halloween. For Abril, it is a metaphor for what it feels like to be different in a world that judges: “Queen of Darkness is for everyone who knows what it is to live in darkness and only feel alive on that one night.”
The memory of darkness as a place of belonging is the concept that holds the release together: the shadows not as punishment but as a temporary home. The voice and the sound form a precise combination, one that sits naturally within the atmospheres and ambiences of the season — a reminder that seasonal releases can be more than a gesture when the idea behind them is honest.
