CF Signals: Afterlife – Lay Me Down [Subatomic UK]

Afterlife has never been interested in repeating clichés or familiar textures. Each album represents a new challenge, a continuous search for new creative possibilities whose rewards multiply every time. So much so that this new album might be the best of his career to date — and the proof is in the music itself.

Across fifteen tracks, Existential moves from the relaxed delight of the sublime 19 Tones to the provocative diatribe running through There’s A Storm Coming. Then come the exotic charms and colorful chimes of Sweetgrass, before the celestial, stimulating string choir shapes the exquisite Absolute.

The deep cinematic tension generated by Midnight Express gives way to the Balearic ambience of Cybele, exciting and tempting in a dazzling display of slow-motion movement. The collection is completed by the breathless ecstasy of Lay Me Down, a serene conclusion for an album rich in atmosphere and deep feeling.

Eternity held in four minutes is the concept that articulates the release: time that stretches without breaking. This is precisely our premiere. The sound of Lay Me Down rests on sheets of well-ethereal atmospheric fabric, extending broadly, managing to overflow the soul with sensations and feelings that are at once absolute and ineffable. Four minutes in which time feels like an eternity worth living and suffering.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that Existential is released on World Kindness Day. As the artist says about the production of the music: “All these songs were written reflecting my thoughts on humanity and its future. I realized that if we all helped each other every day with kindness, we would need very little more to be happy.” Steve Miller’s masterclass in composure and delight reflects, once again, an artistic trajectory built on longevity. Existential is fantastically enveloping music, full of unexpected turns and emotional details, where precision never restricts the free flow of ideas. On the contrary, the caress of each note seems to have room to breathe, evolve and find its own place.

Within Club Furies’ interest in electronic music as a cultural language, Lay Me Down stands as a quiet, generous closing gesture: music that trusts atmosphere and feeling over force.
