Abstract Mechanisms returns with its 42nd catalogue release, Unknown Species, bringing Tarantula Nebula, the project of Mexican producer Ricardo Garduno, back into the label’s darker and more experimental corner of techno. Released through the platform connected to Illegal Alien Records, the four-track EP moves through a dense electronic landscape where deep rhythms, atmospheric textures and a persistent sense of tension shape the overall experience.
Across Deep Inside, Unknown Species, Eterno Vacio and Polaris, the release develops a sound that feels deliberately deep and immersive. The tracks share a strong rhythmic foundation, but each one approaches the atmosphere from a slightly different angle, moving between heavier pressure and more spacious passages. There is a distinctly mental quality to the EP, with repetition and subtle sonic shifts doing much of the work as the tracks gradually unfold.
Our premiere focuses on “Unknown Species”, the EP’s title track. Built around a deep, hypnotic techno groove, the track establishes its atmosphere through layers that seem to emerge gradually from the rhythm. The percussion keeps the movement firmly grounded while darker textures and restrained electronic details create a sense of something unfamiliar taking shape underneath. It is a track that builds its character through accumulation, allowing the groove to remain constant while the surrounding sound keeps shifting.
With Unknown Species, Tarantula Nebula delivers a compact four-track statement that sits comfortably within the deeper and more atmospheric side of techno. The title track captures that balance particularly well: physical enough for the dancefloor, but with an underlying sense of mystery that gives the release its own particular atmosphere.
